here at bearfunk we have been pretty busy as of late it was a casual visit to geneva just like any other. we had just finished a buzzing set and soon after we found ourselves talking to a five bearded academic types. it turns out they were a bunch of theoretical physicists out on a cosmologists night out. they work them hard at cern and that day the large hadron collector had been a real beast rebooting five times before lunch. they were pissed off and needed a new challenge. we offered them a job on the spot and they promptly moved to our london hq working on a wage of tea, vinyl and nandos. we set them a challenge. build us a time machine! they started soaking up all those bearfunk-groove-boson particles and. you know what? they did it! a time machine of our own. our first task, jump back in time to 1985 and retrieve us something really cool. set controls to the manhattan office to celluloid records. fresh from their hit with herbie hancocks rockit, spearheading rap with fab five freddys change the beat and afrika bambata stompers the legendary label is preparing to release the debut album from nyc-paris emigre lord funk.

dirty analog techno from french boss, crackboy trevor jackson: brilliant! crackboy (and all his dirty aliases) never disapoints for his second chapter on crowdspacer (after releases on tigersushi, im a cliché, zone or fragil), crackboy, the king of french dirty analog techno, half of pov with label-boss joakim, digs deeper into that detroit melanchol-epic vibe with weapons of steel on the a-side before going bonkers on the b-side with 2 naughty stripped-down beat-centric dj tools for the sweaty late night crowds. made me think of some gemini tracks when i first heard it (thats a compliment).

ark & pit spector continue their inspired journey with an extended ep full of groovy jams and absorbing rhythms for hold youth. the frenchmen have formed a potent alliance with a series of expertly-crafted, high-quality releases dropping over the last couple of years. on this new ep they go deeper into their sound explorations with five original works and a remix from their parisian buddy and hold youth member, le loup. first up, we go into bumping jazzy territory with ‘chauffage central’, a mesmerising cut with swirling pads, soulful vocal clips and a jaunty b-line. straight up after that, hold youth rudeboy le loup gives ‘chauffage central’ a funky little rework, throwing live sounding percussion, nubian vocal clips, trumpet parps and a pumping bassline into the mix which gives a totally different identity. the final track on side a, is a cheeky teaser called ‘petite ondée’. rolling out for just under two minutes the track has a muffled, jazz-esque feel to it with a warm rolling bassline and bright, sparkling piano keys. on the flip we kick off with ‘air conditionelle’, a lush, retro feeling with those oh-so-familiar heavy-hitting eighties snare licks. the bassline takes you to a new york city street and the whole atmosphere is that of an old school nyc neighbourhood, while a spoken-word sample adds a human touch just before the track comes to an end. ‘sub tropical’ goes a little leftfield with an unusual combination of sounds in tandem with a pulsating low end, occasional sax licks and punchy percussion to give it plenty of energy. ‘averse et contre tous’ closes out the ep with a slothish ride into the sunset – ark and pit spector show their experimental side presenting an odd union between blues samples, gruff electronic sounds and piano keys. another triumphant effort from ark and pit spector, in fact, some of the finest work to date. make sure you check it out!

it’s been some time since the last black jukebox edition came out. this time shir khan hits us with the 14th edition featuring onsra & bas roos. secret parisian project onsra came out of nowwhere with his debut track funky town‘ which was the best selling track on exploited last year - topping tons of charts. support did come from various djs such as disclosure, danny krivit, laurent garnier, dj sneak, luke solomon, adriatique, terranova, ardalan, ben pearce, friendly fires, xxxxy, miguel campbell, jaques renault, rainer trueby, dj t to mention a few. now he is back with 2 new joints - so good is a 112bpm loopbased disco house jam which reminds a bit of old soundstream records. other day is a real boogie joint. bas roos on the flip is a newbie and youngster from rotterdam with a fresh residency at toffler club keeping things smooth and mellow with searchin’ and don’t let go the disco limited collector s vinyl only. cop that before it sells out.

much-celebrated kompakt staple the field returns to the spotlight with new album the follower, his fifth full-length offering after from here we go sublime (kompakt rsd 02 cd 57), yesterday and today (kompakt 193 cd 72), looping state of mind (kompakt 241 cd 94) and cupids head (kompakt 290 cd 110). swedish soundsmith axel willner is well-known for his mastery when it comes to the allusive layering of loops, but it was with his last album cupids head that a newly-found, somewhat pressing snappishness started to replace the soft-hued sonics of his ambient-infused techno, imbued with a darker mood and stronger footing than before. a carefully gauged balance of stoic motorik and gloomy drones was key here - just as it is for the follower which goes even further in blurring the lines between concrete experimentation, body music and precisely laid-out arrangement, leading to one of the most rhythmically and texturally engaging listening experiences in willners catalogue.

the 1978 record, which goes for up to $800 on the collectors market, comes with a lore all its own. the liner notes explain that at the time of its recording, davis was suffering from personal turmoil and a head full of memories from the vietnam war. the infamous jonestown, guyana mass murder occurred two days before the recording session and weighed heavily on his consciousness. the resulting electronic score would garner attention from legendary motor city dj electrifying mojo. in the early 80s, davis performed as 3070 in cybotron alongside juan atkins, laying the groundwork for detroit techno and electro with cuts like alleys of your mind. despite successful cybotron albums released on fantasy records, davis spent time penniless and abandoned in a v.a. hospital. the new 12inch version of methane sea was cut to lacquer straight from the original master tapes. davis currently lives in ypsilanti, michigan and works with music videos, fractal designs and cgi.

shlømo signs new singular, cat number 9 with titan ep. the parisian artist, co-founder of taapion records delivers two deep techno cuts on a side, clearly floor orientated, “titan” opens the hostilities and shows all the thoroughness of the man, powerfull and precise, sharp… then comes “memento mori”, made in collaboration with his friend awb (adrien ozouf), where we can find the same ingredients with more emotional flavours, going deeper. b side starts with a drastic reshape of “titan”, by norman nodge himself, before going on a down tempo warehouse feeiling closing perfectly this record with “void axis”.

jumpmono records is the brand new label from uk techno brothers, anti-slam & w.e.a.p.o.n. after the growing success of their digital only label, jumpstereo records, it was only a matter of time before the brothers went back to their roots and created a label not only for the digital world but also heavily focused on vinyl.

after the debut release on do not sleep become a sure fire club hit, the ibiza party turned much loved house and tech label now has another weapon up its sleeve. the next release is from perel, is titled charles manson and features another standout remix from resident darius syrossian. perel is a berlin based dj, producer and vocalist who is quickly rising through the ranks. she has released both originals and remixes on o*rs before now, and has a robust house and techno infused sound that simply makes you want to dance. as a dj she is a regular at cool spots like farbfernseher and impresses here with what she serves up for do not sleep. the original is a chunky, no-nonsense house track with bouncy bass, subtle vocals and the sort of futuristic and soulful pads that help make it really stand out. it s a slick, well produced sound that is sure to make it into many top record bags in the coming weeks and months. the remix from darius is a subtle one that layers in some trance inducing vocals and extra breakdowns so as to really highlight the powerful effect of the drums each and every time they drop.

benedikt frey crafts a musical aesthetic that (much like the esp institute) might only be seen in its true form from a birds-eye view—a whole greater than the sum of its parts. his playful indifference to genre specifics and pre-prescribed instrumentation or production techniques makes for a loose and refreshing collection of work, and this debut for the esp institute, the lobbyist, serves up an incongruous three tracks so bewildering and narcotic we’re already impatiently fiending for more. on side a, the title track is no less than a medieval assault. led by a stomping war drum and a blasting bass synth that might literally have caught the studio on fire, an erratic array of clanking percussion, hi-hats and cymbals push us into a sinister corner where his whispering chant grants us the smallest bit of humanity before continuing with the beating. on side b, cupids delight (ft tcb) and gravel both explore variations on beauty—the former in a blur of ghost-like vocals smeared in harmony across a low-slung machine drums, and the latter evoking a tropical affair gone psychedelic, complete with drawn-out disorienting marimba and ritual clave/tom arrangements. welcome home brother benedikt, what took you so long?

this is the much sought-after album from 1978 reissued as lp vinyl for the first time. showcase was recorded with the revolutionaries and the aggrovators and mixed by ossie hibbert in a vocal & dub extended version style. the lp comes with the original artwork, 180 gram heavy weight, remastered, new vinyl cut and leaflet with extended linernotes. jimmy riley is a veteran reggae singer who started his career as harmony singer for the treasure isle label with producer arthur duke reid and joined also the rocksteady stars the uniques in replacing slim smith for a brief run of hits before deciding to go solo.

keeping up the urgent pace set by the strength in numbers collection, thema now turns to a modern master of the jakbeat, d’marc cantu. hailing from ann arbor on the fringes of detroit, cantu has worked for more than a decade developing a sound that carries the torch from the box jam originators of techno and house music. his first appearances were alongside the mighty tadd mullinix (better known as james t. cotton) with their 2 am/fm project, before bringing traxx into the fold for the x2 venture. as a solo artist cantu has shored up on labels as highly regarded as crème organization, m>o>s, nation and desire, bringing a rich, full-bodied sound laden with powerful synth hooks, crafty drum programming and a live, jammed-out delivery that overflows with imagination. given his adventurous tendencies and punchy midwestern finish, cantu is a perfect fit on thema and the six tracks that make up this record show a great deal of the diversity the man is capable of, from dancefloor burners to atmospheric introspections.

a industrial callous, caustic and fervently cruel ep. contort yourself has once again gathered the best and boldest from past and present for its fourth ep. to begin with we have the grimacing visage of volition immanent, an intense live act made up of parrish smith and mark van de maat (knekelhuis). behind rawkish distortion, splintered beats and acrid bars screams a boiled anger, a track spitting on the divides of punk and electronics. nastiness is taken up a notch as noise ne er-do-wells zombies under stress take over. static is bent and doubled across thick chords and collapsed clap in the 1986 -maan zal zijn before the raw and raging battery of in onze tijd. l.i.e.s. regular svengalisghost grapples with maan zal zijn, channelling the originals rage into a mechanical monster. the 12inch is bookended with bite as mark forshaw (tabernacle/berceuse heroique) closes with the tortured and torrential thump of submission.

repress - afrobeat makers vol. 3 >> nu guinea comes back with a joint venture between comet records and early sounds recordings. by re-working the original magic drum patterns from the afrobeat master tony allen, they created a compilation of tracks which is charged by a voluminous electronic jazz-funk imprint.

celebrating 20 years, thomas urv and miss mostly’s ploink imprint drops the first in a trilogy of techno releases featuring the norwegian brand’s core artists.
the package inaugurates with oslo’s prins thomas editing tromsø legend mental overdrive ‘hellbent’ for a decadent cut featuring sinister drones and dusky atmospherics. urhaug, also known under his house alias tobii, demonstrates tantalising melodies and a chugging bassline in ‘7.3’ before ploink veteran nordenstam takes things into a rhythmic direction in ‘haustfargar’ using shuffling percussion, bouncy toms and spectral synths. christian tilt, another core ploink member, then drops the mesmerising ‘ord’ boasting industrial stabs, a throbbing low-end and cosmic effects. tying it all together, fresh bergen talent hutmacher concludes the release with a cacophony of grooves, samples and echoes in an arcane number named ‘dobbelgänger’.

ian blevins is the keeper of the jewel in the crown. this is his second offering for the esp institute. picking up right where we left off, side a unleashes another explosive big room belter with resume a driving rhythmic monster that takes advantage of the whips and cracks in ian’s drum machine arsenal, while warm chords lay a foundation for a quirky lead melody and rubbery pulse to dance upon. akin to hannibal, blevins esp institute debut in 2015, the arrangement here toys with us before revealing the true guts of the track—this time characterized halfway through by a punctuating gangster piano hook. on side b, poor old head utilizes ian’s signature drum styling we’ve come to adore, but here he establishes swells of melancholy via bending notes that meow and purr, beautifully ebbing and flowing though an array of incongruous dial tones and bells—shakey and barely out of sync, yet cradling a loosely drawn chord progression. these two songs will smack you up before they rub you down.

tectonic label boss pinch returns to home territory with his latest tales from the darkside. hard, uncompromising beats, sculpted for twisted dancefloors. lead track ‘screamer’ sees recent collaborator and grime-legend, riko dan, pick up the mic to voice pinch’s industrial garage style rhythm, true to terror-form. complementing the darkside sonics, riko’s savage delivery threatens from the offset, with no let-up, no sign of weakness. not for the faint hearted. flip for ‘no justice’, seeing pinch on solo production duties providing a sub-heavy pounding rhythm, twisting an almost ragga style beat in dark dub territory. police sirens wail around calamitous thunder and atmospherics before the beat pounds in. second drop brings warped basslines to the forefront, pushing things further down the rabbit hole. ‘screamer’ has been played on bbc radio 1 on the benji b show, also featured on mary-anne hobbs’ 6 music show. dj support from the likes of mumdance, loefah & many more.

superconcious present a further evolution for melbourne producer andras. looney house recorded with diy immediacy, this fresh 5 tracker takes subtle cues from cajmere, pal joey and lesser known 90s australian cuts culled from the 3rrr fm library. t.n.t.f. was the fastest track andrás had even written until revving the pajero offroad and clocking 138 bpm on always pumping. on the two mixes of gold coast, he finds heaven in a tourist hell, making hotel room acid before hitting the balcony for some cool breakbeat over a bacardi and coke. the absurdity continues with the horny australiana disco of soy boy, rounding off a welcome return to his inimitable solo work.

* this is the seventh surgeon album.
* -while exploring new production techniques using old and unlikely hardware, the results were so unusual that i really had the sense that these pieces of equipment didn t actually create these sounds, rather they were in fact some kind of elaborate reception device that allowed me to tune into transmissions from distant galaxies. the music i could hear was actually the received transmissions of pop hits from those distant galaxies that were being played on their radio stations. i quickly recorded all that i could before losing the transmission.
* i consulted with dr andrew read, the astrophysicist with whom i recorded guitar treatments in 1999. he has worked on the discovery of the most distant galaxies and astronomical objects in the universe. together we came up with a possible list of where these musical transmissions may have come from.

in the follow up to huxleys widow ep aus present their second offering of 2016 and in doing so welcome back two label favourites: timothy blake and marquis hawkes as hawkes & blake both artists made outstanding debuts for aus last year, with hawkes having more than a hand in blakes stormy search ep before delivering his own disco inflected hit chances. now we see a continuation of the studio chemistry as both parties join forces and present love precipitation: a pair of no frills bombs built strictly for the dancefloor. playful piano lines and jubilant synths are propelled by expertly crafted 909 drums throughout, recalling in equal measure the classic garage sound of detroit and the soulful grooves that emanated from new jersey in the 90s. with hawkes & blake aus continue to maintain the high quality in 2016 and offer us an insight into an exciting new production pairing.

2015 brought the trilogy of the dancer to ressort. now the labels core artists each remix their tracks in circles. while all of them aim for the dancefloor, ressorts core artists could not sound more diverse. ekserd and border one aim for the raw, the groovy and the pure while array access and glos lose themselves more and more in sound design and dreaminess. since the many aspects of art and music form a cycle of ying and yang, each artist shows the other an interpretation of what he might have missed before. be it a complete stomper or a light absorbing epos, a deep and groovy house and techno hybrid or a journey into the depths of space every artist made one of the well known tracks released on previous eps his own. it is a very colourful package that bares every moment the label tried to cover in it s series before.

albion the disco druid from sweden takes us to paradise with four cuts of obscure hard to find oddities. with releases on rotating souls ambassadors reception he drops 4 tracks aimed at the dancefloor. music you have never heard before number 3 and you know the drill by now ltd pressing.

the bush is a homage to the place where i have lived for the last decade (askew road). the askew road itself is slowly changing so i wanted to document all the places that play a big part in mine and my families lives before they eventually get sold for more flats or tescos. 002 was all about the mighty sun pub which has now been sold and transformed into a costa coffee and an estate agents. next up is our local park which hopefully will never see change as its been our little slice of heaven in w12 since we moved here.

willie burns (the trilogy tapes/wt records/ l.i.e.s. records) complements this unusual walk in the woods by absorbing it into his warehouse banger signature. burns rework focuses on micro events of the original to create a sort of granular house version out of them. the adventure continues on a somewhat melancholic turn with we have been here before and sometimes as the b side. while we have been before is a more dancefloor-oriented take to krautrocks signature synthline layering, sometimes is norwells venture into a more techno universe than he’s mostly associated with to come out with a soothing, yet banging work. as digital bonuses, norwell offers glimpse a short but catchy synth jam riddled with different layers of complexity. this piece is then taken into obscurity by farbwechsel records boss s olbricht for a ride into a 80s-cyberpunk club where people are trying to dance their problems away in a dystopian world.

the new blackie & the oohoos album is something to indulge in. sounding dark, hypnotic and notably more electronic than before, the two sisters new songs are drenched in synths and melancholy. pressing on clear vinyl, cd-copy of the album included.

nice price deal !!! manchester s techno alchemist and master of the roland tr-808, the enigmatic mr.raw, debuting mancdetroit 12” on win or loose records straight outta toronto ca! long term nightclub shaman on the northwest of england circuit, raw served time in rotterdam s early 90s gabba circles before returning back to manchester to twist brain s n bodies with his wild blend of freestyle techno. raw s witnessed trends in production go from hardware to soft and back again but he s never strayed from a solid rack mount set up based solely around the tr-808. with a few added choice fx processors raw s style is loose n live and captures a pure spirit rarely exercised by today s pacified youth. -perseus dance- sounds like the kind of shit the great ron hardy would jam on, with two copies, for hours. inflicting a sherm-stick flavored mind-blast to the floor that may have indeed caused the good man to blush, we find percolating 808 percussion woven together with a mystic, fizzing lead line and twangy analogue artifacts. darkside acid dragged wailing and whining from rusholmes drains. flip and we have -hard on-: a twisted x-rated porno horror jam. raw s rapid-fire double-speed drum loops firing away while a plethora of abhorrent vox and coital sounds converge onto the track. a total wrecking ball of filth and hellish distortion which just smolders away in the basement of some sadistic nightclub like a rotten but highly intoxicating fungus ready to switch on any passing freaks.

the result is a powerful selection of vibrant techno, with a warm, almost spiritual, feel to it. both donato dozzy and neel have appeared individually on time to express before, here they appear for the first time together as voices from the lake. the italian duo offer more evidence of their distinctive brand of hypnotic techno with zulu vortex , a spiralling percussive workout. this is paired with a track from wata igarashi, a rising japanese dj and producer. night is a glowing, radiant piece of techno that has become a regular feature in peter van hoesen s recent dj sets.
